First Place Winner
Sean "Nerukan" of Devianne
Playing Lineage II during the formative teenage years of social development really intensifies the game's effect on an individual. Beginning at the age of fourteen, I've played since the open beta in April 2004. I was introduced to the game by a love interest that eventually broke. Six years later I stand with a three year old relationship that frames all that I do in real life and a multitude of friends across the planet. I have chosen to organize my story into two parts. The first section covers the details of the first two years (approximately). The wheels of fate turned; I met the friends that would accompany me on my journey through the fantasy. Next, I focus on the relationship building of the next three years and the real life effect it had.
In April 2004, at the age of fourteen, I began playing Lineage II with my first girlfriend - a gamer that I had met on a different game. We played with her brother and a group of friends. While they declined to purchase the game in May, I decided to go for it and even convinced my girlfriend to join me. Two character changes later, we found our home in Devianne as dark elves: Nerukan was born. As Prelude gave way to Chronicle 1, my girlfriend changed main characters to a human healer. This left me as a level 37 Assassin and her at level 20. Unable to play together, I decided to commit "levelicide" and deleveled to level 20. After all, I was playing the game to play with her. Not long after, she grew bored with the game itself and moved on. Fortunately, she left me with additional adena that funded the purchase of a light crossbow which would finally get me to the holy grail of level 40.
These events must have surely been fate. As I was grinding in the Execution Grounds, I heard recruiting shouts from a character named Wrenn, leader of Clan Truth. I soon found myself in this clan with a group of friends I would be closely associated with for years to come. I rose quickly through the ranks; I became an officer. I became a Phantom Ranger, and Truth created the "Fellowship" alliance with a clan named Undomiel. Ever after, I would always keep at least one of my characters in Undomiel to enjoy the unique blend of casual play, questing, role-playing, and all-around fun that they could provide. Undomiel formed a link to the role-playing community of Devianne. It tended to be a lively, but dramatic community in that day, and it was going through a difficult time as people - or their characters (who could always tell?) - rubbed each other the wrong way. Either these troubles or others eventually led to the disbanding of Undomiel (later to be recreated) and the clan of all dark elven females, the Shilen Sisterhood. This motivated me to found "Dark Truth" - a dark-elf only clan allied with Truth. My experiment in leadership did not last long, however, before fate yet again knocked at my door. A former Shilen Sister whom had joined Dark Truth - Mayuki - added a friend named Kamui to Dark Truth. One day, I became aware that Kamui was dying repeatedly while trying to achieve level 20. Concerned, I went to Dion to help by tanking the monsters and guarding her from griefers. At 0.03% after achieving her level, she immediately lost interest in fighting, and decided to play hide-and-seek around a nearby tree (see accompanying screenshot). This was the romantic beginning of a friendship that grew into love.
In the three years following these events, I continued to play the game in various ways, in many clans, and with many friends (old and new). I loved to explore on my downtime. I was interested in the politics within my clan and amongst other clans. I was usually in medium-tiered clans, so I saw my share of PVP. Incidentally, my relationship with Kamui linked me to one of the most infamous characters on Devianne: Reijin, her mother. Reijin was the server's first Eva's Saint Hero and held the title for many months thereafter. Over the course of the changing political climate, she was one day an enemy and on another an ally. I fell in love with Kamui and traveled 500 miles to meet them both in real life. At seventeen, we were both high school students; we used every break we could to meet up again. Now, at twenty, we're still in love and we still enjoy playing Lineage II from time to time. Don't count on Kamui to hold the grind for more than thirty minutes before getting distracted by the game's other attractions, though.
Because I played Lineage II in my teenage years, my own social and political values were developing rapidly. Lineage II allowed me to communicate frequently with individuals from all across Europe, one from New Zealand, and sometimes people from the world's other continents. They often challenged my views that, at the time, were probably more traditionally "American". While I debated well even then, I was left with ideas of the real and the theoretical that I had never considered before. The game and its social environment influenced me greatly in my decision to study Political Science in college. I have devoted hours upon hours to Lineage II and I have gained many things from the experience. Love, friendship, social experience (albeit simulated), and foreign exposure have blessed my virtual path.
Second Place Winner
Rob "Deathspawner" of Aria
In late 2003, I had received an invitation to alpha-test a game I was anticipating for what seemed like an eternity... Lineage II. At the time, I was naive, and had no idea what was to come. But, all of that soon became clear. At this particular time of the game's life, there were at most 100 testers on the lone available server, so much time was spent on solo exploration. However, It was with this solo exploration that I came to appreciate the game so greatly.
I began life in Aden as a Human Fighter named Deathspawner. Because there was a lack of other players, I found myself exploring Talking Island solo, and during this initial trek, I clued into the reasons Lineage II was special. Within the first 10 levels of my character's life, it became apparent that this game wasn't one that held your hand for most of the journey. No, this was the real deal. At level 5, I found myself perished by an Elder Wolf... a monster equal in level. In many other online RPG's, there's a fair bit of lenience when hunting in beginner areas, but for Lineage II, the challenge is much higher. That's a good thing, and one of the major reasons the game is set apart from all the rest. To succeed, it requires dedication, and not only great knowledge of your character's abilities, but the abilities of other classes as well.
From the moment I landed in Aden, I was awestruck. Here was this gorgeous-looking island, filled with cute Elpys and Keltirs, and an entire unknown world ahead of me to explore. Because the base of players during the game's alpha stage was limited, I leveled up rather slowly. But as I'm a "run and gun" kind of guy, I didn't let the lack of levels hold me back, and within no time, I was exploring all of Talking Island. This lead me to the first time I ever found myself literally scared from an MMORPG. I walked through a refreshing waterfall only to stumble on... massive spiders. The fact that I almost soiled myself didn't even matter, because within no time, I was back at Talking Island - with some experience lost... and gained. I quickly learned that the run-and-gun kind of mentality didn't quite work here.
I partook in a great deal of exploration during this alpha, and died all over. I guess that makes my nickname, "Deathspawner", rather appropriate. From the School of Dark Arts to Gludin Village to Elven Forest and beyond... I have corpse remnants all over the place. I didn't mind dying though, as I appreciated the challenge, and as mentioned, Lineage II offers a unique one. In many MMORPG's, as long as you are a high level, you can go anywhere in the game safely, even if it means just running through. That's not the case here. You may be max level, but it takes little to find yourself lying on the ground, humiliated.
The first time that aspect truly hit me was on the first-ever test server, to test out Chronicle 2. I was blessed enough to find myself at level 75 equipped with A-grade armor (which at the time wasn't even available on the public servers), so I of course headed out into some more difficult areas. I thought I'd be safe heading into the Ant Nest to see the Queen, but no. Not too soon after entering, I died, and de-leveled to 74. So, I headed into Tower of Insolence, and not too long after that, again... dead. It didn't take too long for me to clue in... this game means business!
Mere weeks after being invited into Lineage II's alpha, a private beta opened, and more people joined, availing me the chance to group and hunt with other people. That we did, in all different parts of Aden. At this time, level 40 was the max level one could achieve, and seeing as it was difficult to hit given the lack of an economy, most people hit level 20 at most and then created a new character and class. But one thing that became apparent to me, was that people were having fun - with both the challenge, and exploring the game world... along with admiring other people's classes and monsters that were still too high in level to do battle with.
Aside from the aspect of meeting new people, hanging out with friends, and gathering together to accomplish something impressive, it was Aden as a whole that grabbed me and didn't want to let me go. To call Aden interesting would be a gross understatement, because even as far back as Prelude, the world featured numerous hunting grounds that were cool to look at and fun to explore, and were most importantly, exciting. From the cloudy depths of Sea of Spores to the scary Swampland outside of Dark Elven Village to the unique Hunters' Village to the colorful Elven village to the wasteland loaded with ants... this world was unique. Because the game offers an equally unique challenge, once you are able to explore all corners of Aden, it feels gratifying.
Difficult as it might be, it's that factor that leads to one of the game's strongest suits... the camaraderie. To be successful in Aden, well-equipped friends and fellows are imperative. The world isn't designed to be soloed, and as a result, strong friendships are built over time, and exciting events are forever stitched into memory. Even more than six years later, I still speak fondly of my earliest days in Aden. At that time, no one knew what to expect, how to best play a class, or how to conquer anything. It's hard to recreate such a feeling, that's for sure.
If there is just one memory I'd like to rid, it might be the one of me blowing up an unbelievable +18 C-grade weapon. Few things virtually can hurt so physically!
Third Place Winner
Tomasz "SierraStarfall" of Teon
First time I get in Lineage II world I won't forget for sure, my first choice Female Dark Elf Wizard, perfect. Things so dark and smooth around me, and first sounds of soulshots , that was pure magic! How my avatar moves and shoots, I was starry-eyed. Then after I chill out from amazing visuals, I put speakers volume up, and sound of wood , crows start surrounding me plus beautiful music time to time playing on background, I really start feeling and breathing with Lineage II world.
I start getting levels quite fast, thought easy leveling here, after next few I got it how wrong I was. ;) Plenty people running around killing whatever show up and then suddenly I find myself in a spot where one mob and two players show up. Yes I have to deal with my first PvP. It was real drama because I think we both had no idea what we are doing nor how to PvP back then. ;D It was more of psychological fight, however after my mana end, and elf dagger was still on his legs and hitting me or at least trying to do that, I decide to... run! XD It was good five min of running with psycho elf on my back, I jump in to some water and dive deep, when my mana regenerate than I hit back few times and win my very first incredible PvP. I was so proud and excited, this was moment of triumph. It was also a moment when I learned that I shouldn't stay underwater too long, that's how I got my first Resurrection. ;)
After a while I got it my D-grade status with first class transfer and start collecting some gear, nothing to posh but it was looking good on my Dark Elf. When I was exping ordinary mob drop it some scroll, it was EWD. I use it and I liked its results. I notice in a city a few for sale, so bought three more and enchanted to +4. I notice some light blue aura around my weapon, cool! Sometime later I put two more, aura was looking cooler, every time getting better colours. I was wondering why more people don't have that cool aura on their weapons, it's so easy I thought... After few days I manage to buy more scrolls and enchant till +14! Colours were so deep and I was respected on every spot, it was powerfully weapon back then. With every enchant excitement was bigger, I was unstoppable. Believing in good luck I went to Giran to get one more scroll and then, first time I heard this awful sound and found in my inventory D-crystals instead of my shiny weapon. I couldn't believe it! I felt like child robbed of his lollipop! I understood back then the power of enchanting.
On top of that my dear girlfriend was watching and observing my Lineage II fever. She wasn't against it, she like the fact that in evenings I spent more time at home. ;) However she looked at me like I was becoming some kind of weirdo. I asked her if she want to play as well but she wasn't really interested. Once she asked me what's that little cute dragon over there that this guy had; it was hatchling. I told her she can have one if she start playing! ;D (I know I'm evil.) She created a female dwarf. I gave her hatchling and she played a bit from time to time for few evenings but she wasn't excited or anything, she was focus more on the hatchling than on whole game in general. Until one day in work I receive phone call from my girlfriend, she sound very worried. She told me that some big rock monster just kill her little hatchling!! I couldn't stop laughing, after that I know it she won't say anything bad about me playing Lineage II. ;D
Sometime later I decide it to share my Lineage II experience with my friends from work, then hardcore times came, all my friends from work got totally addicted to Lineage II and lost contact with reality for a while. The first morning , the exciting topic in the office was about Lineage II and all the guys had red eyes from playing late. Of course no one would like to admit it was from that and created some ridiculous excuses why she/he couldn't sleep all night. Imagine a grown-up man shouting and trying to describe in how exciting our PvP in LOA was yesterday! It was stand-up comedy, but in the moments like that I realized how unordinary Lineage II was and it is so even these days.
Probably all of that wasn't healthy or smart but when I look at this now, it was really funny and I also believed that only great games can have such an effect on real life. I always will remember that Lineage II was that kind of game for me and even now when I'm talking about Lineage II to those friends who don't play anymore, the devilish smile appeal on their faces. :)
Fourth Place Winner
Arvydas "HellFrost" of Teon
It is spring 2004, roughly 5 months since Internet first came to my house. I'm 15, living in a small town as well as complete majority of my friends. We spend a lot of time together starting with various sports and ending with very popular computer games at that time. Life is steady up to the one ordinary day at school when a friend introduced me to a new game which literally changed the way I live today.
My memories begin at Einhovant's School of Magic in Talking Island where I start my first steps as human male mystic into the world of Lineage II. Blown away by stunning Age of Splendor log-in screen, a field full of white flowers moving in the wind with a lighthouse in the bay, I'm again stunned by the surrounding environment. Immediately I explore every single corner of the school as I'm afraid of leaving something important behind.
Getting familiar with controls and interface I leave Einhovant's School and cautiously head for the beach evading all monsters so they couldn't kill me. On the left I notice what looks like village and lead by my senses I directly head to it. On my way I see a lot of other players around killing monsters however as a mystic I cannot make my magic to work. Wind strike just doesn't work and I don't know why. However I'm very excited to get into the village so leave this problem for later. Getting closer to village a rabbit like monster called Elpy spawns. I get excited to try my chances as it doesn't look very dangerous. Wind strike still just doesn't work so I to hit it with staff and for my surprise Elpy do not attack back but just runs. What a relief! Easy first kill as well as first experience points. I'm so excited! I continue killing poor Elpies until I reach level 2 lead by incredible animation. Village is close so I head for it again.
This time I reach it and immediately amazing, warm music, which I will never forget, fills my ears. I'm touched and speechless so I listen to it for a while. Village feels cosy and my exploration is an immediate success. I locate weapon and armour shop, grocery shop, warehouse and skill trainers. Sadly trainers tells me that I'm too low level to learn skills yet so after exploring every corner of the village I move outside to the beach and take on those dogs outside. Still can't find out why wind strike doesn't work as a ranged attack however it's not important as I bough sword and got some light armour droops. Soon I find a problem with wind strike as I accidently target the monster being in range. Congratulations. You have reached level 7! As fast as possible I rush to the village and take new skills. Sadly I don't have enough SP for all of them so I took other range nuke and learned new level of wind strike. Feeling way more confident I head to explore the lands. Scenery is amazing! Vast fields, beautiful waterfall, high mountains and my first dungeon: Elven ruins. I'm impressed.
More than month passes since I started. I'm finally level 20 and very excited about changing my class and moving out of the Island. However Gatekeeper charges way too much so I use ship. Anxiously minutes passes as ship goes across the sea, can't wait for new discoveries and here they come once we reach Gludin's Harbour which looks absolutely incredible. On my quest I get an impression of vast open world as I discover canyons, wastelands, ruins, lakes, arena and all of this is just a little part of Gludin! I'm still new to the game. I learn what buffs are and how to use them. On my way to level 30 I explore vast areas of the world. I visit Ruins of Despair, Ruins of Agony, Forgotten Temple, Abandoned camp, Fellmere lakes execution grounds, Orc barracks and School of Dark arts. Only disappointment was a school of dark arts as the name of the place inspired high expectations.
Road to 40 is rough and begins to seem impossible until the discovery of spirit shots. This makes levelling a lot easier and the goal of becoming sorcerer possible. Also during this period I join my first clan which is formed from people living in the same country. While time is going by these players became more than clan mates, they became friends. Developed trust helped us while we were playing and gathering gear. I remember finally getting my first Karmian set and a Ghouls staff and how I was excited about. In game communication extended to the meetings in real life. This became a tradition. Not only I travelled across the country but I made lot of friends too. Even though most of them do not play anymore but we still meet.
Ironically the story which began at Einhovant's School of Magic ended up in Cemetery. My sorcerer was level 56 when logged out and forgotten. However the legacy continued and today I'm studying abroad, the friends I have made are still with me and the passion for discovery as well as travelling continues to grow. For all of this and more I'm thankful to a friend and a game to which he introduced me one ordinary day at school...
Fourth Place Winner
Zack "Rooby" of Phoenix
Rooby was created 22nd of January of 2005. I started playing the game with two of my college friends Elliot and Andrew. We decided that we would all create human characters. Elliot would be our warrior, Andrew would be our mage, and I would be our buffer/healer. The way we came up with the names for our characters is probably typical of most people, we had watched The Fifth Element the previous night and decided since we would be leveling together and grouping a lot the names should be something that could be easily recognized. Elliot chose to name his character leeluu, Andrew decided on Korbin, and I became Rooby. This is how I got started in the game and how Rooby came to be created.
As I'm sure everyone knows your first few levels are the most fun that you can remember having. Exploring new places, seeing new sights, and getting to know the mechanics of the game. Since we all created humans we started out exploring Talking Island. I remember fighting golems and werewolves, exploring the Elven Ruins, and many many times meeting leeluu and Korbin at the Obelisk for another grinding session. Of all the memories that I have of Talking Island there are a few that stick in my mind, one being the most challenging mobs I faced back in the day, and the other being two characters that would become our most hated rivals. Remember those mobs that you just hated with a passion? The ones that would always seem to kill you no matter what measures you took to prevent it? Well the spiders on the far end of the island were those mobs to me. I can't even begin to count the number of times I died to them, though looking back on it a lot of those deaths could've been prevented if I had not been a complete and utter noob and been oblivious to the existence of spiritshots.
One of the aspects of Lineage II that attracted the 3 of us in the first place was the PvP/PK system that was in place; during these early levels while we were not fully involved in PvP, we certainly encountered our fair share of PKers. Two of what we felt were the most notorious PKers on the island were Surebes, an Abyss Walker, and EvilZero, a Bladedancer. These two would become the very bane of our leveling efforts, they always seemed to show up when we had finally entrenched ourselves in a difficult area or when we were just about to ding that critical level. But for all my anger at the times I was killed by those two I believe I owe them a debt of gratitude as well, for without their constant harassment leeluu, Korbin, and I might not have been as inspired to level up and better gear ourselves in order to seek our revenge.
PvP also played a major role in my final choice of class. As we increased in levels and prowess leeluu, Korbin, and I moved on to bigger and better areas, namely Cruma Tower. While leveling here I met my future clan mates Tokaren and Ragg of Pentagon clan. If either of those two were on I could always find room in a party with them and it was with them that I finally got a taste of mass PvP. Cruma was such a hot bed for toons of all levels to grind that there was contention for every available space. Many times we were involved in both group and mass PvP, one of the names that sticks in my mind is LoveBOA and her clan. When we would PvP I would take great pleasure in preventing someone from dying by keeping them healed and bringing those dead back into the fight with rezzes. When I inquired what class would allow me to do this better everyone answered that Bishop would be the class for me. So after I hit level 36 I began the long and arduous class change quests to become a bishop (yes back in the day no one waited until 40 to do all 3 quests at once). After I became a bishop I was amazed at how much easier I was able to heal a party as compared to being just a cleric. And even now after 80 levels of being a Cardinal it is still my most favorite class to play. When I'm in the groove it seems that my party is nigh invincible. Also my current clan has a lot to do with why I love to play my cardinal still, CORE is such a great group of friends and is always willing to help out with whatever I need. A big thanks to all those who helped me throughout my Lineage II career and I hope to see many more of you on the fields of Aden.

What do I write about?
In a short essay, share the details on when you first started playing Lineage II and how you grew to love the game. Describe, as much as you are comfortable, the effect of Lineage II on your real-life, the development of friendships in-game, and the details of your character's early achievements. A few questions you might ask yourself to help your writing along:
- When did I first start playing Lineage II?
- What was going on in my life at the time, and why was Lineage II a good experience for me in that context?
- Where did I hunt the most? What friends did I make? What armor set and weapon did I want more than anything else in those early days?
- What times do I miss the most out of all my time playing Lineage II?
If you are a Lineage II player that has only begun recently, you can still participate in this contest! Simply write about your experiences in the same manner as posted above, detailing your joys and challenges as you explore your new home in Aden.

How are the winners selected?
There is no perfect formula for a "best essay" in this contest. The winning essays will be chosen by our staff based on what we consider our favorite stories: the most engaging and best-written stories, those that will make us wish we could have lived them, too. Eighteen essays will be chosen according to those that stood out the most in these aspects. We will rank them by 1st place through 18th place.
The essays must be in proper English language. Typos, accidental misspelling, and grammatical errors will be forgiven if a sentence's message is still clear despite those mistakes. If your essay is among the top five that will be posted on the website, any spelling or grammar mistakes in it will be corrected before posting.
