October 5 - 18, 2011

Before the Goddess of Destruction update arrives, with its exciting content changes and new zones, let's make an archive of all the things we love most about the zones we're playing in now.

The Aden Archives Contest is a chance for you to document your favorite zone in Lineage II. Create a historical report detailing that zone's story lines, NPCs, and monsters for a chance to win fun prizes--and maybe even a plushy! Everyone who submits an eligible entry wins something.

Congratulations to the Winners!

The following eight players won the contest by writing the best report about the zone of their choice.

Three zones did not receive eligible entries, but staff members will document them before Goddess of Destruction launches so that the knowledge of these areas is not lost to time.

  • Kamael Village
  • Ruins of Agony and Ruins of Despair
  • Swamplands

We'd like to extend an honorable mention to the players that submitted an eligible entry and won a participation prize for their efforts in this contest! Congratulations to sfixterman, ev4n, and Naien of Chronos, and to killerP0A, Tak1, and MishalaMtG of Naia. Thank you!

Talking Island Village by Polyamorous of Chronos

There was a moment of anticipation and excitement the moment you approached Talking Island Village in the first days of Lineage II.

Still eager from your first baby steps and the killing of some innocent Keltirs or Elpies, the village was usually your first confrontation with other players from around the world. It used to be so busy; from the moment you entered you would watch people run from the bustling shops, carrying their wooden swords or staffs out into the open wilds. Some folk would be just outside, usually chatting or fighting and sometimes you would be encouraged to join in. Those times used to be the most fun.

The village kept you busy; everyone was in need of some assistance or another, whether it was to give someone the courage to talk to a loved one, or to help receive an antidote for a disastrous poison. Everyone told a different story and each would send you to an unknown destination on the island.

The landscape is impressive, stretches of beautiful green grass dotted with trees, a depictable pathway leading you easily through the island, all the way to first landmark of Talking Island, the Obelisk of Victory. The Obelisk was built after the Elves were victorious over the Orcs many years ago, however the Elves soon left due to the betrayal of the Humans quickly after. Sir Collin Windawood stands guard there, protecting the outer borders of the village and guiding potential future protectors of the land.

He mentions an old ruin deep within the woods, the Elven Ruins. It used to act as a school for those seeking knowledge back when the Elves of Light owned the island, it was there where a lot of adventurers went, and in many cases, never returned.

Before even contemplating entering the old ruins, some better equipment was needed, so a trip to the Armor and Weapons store was a common occurrence. The island is filled with so many dangerous monsters, you had to be prepared. Orcs and werewolves were very common and could sometimes just drop on you from anywhere. So at level 10, equipped with the popular Bone Armor and a weapon of your choice, many of us entered the ruins.

Further north on the island, there is a small farm occupied by some horrified residents. The reason they are in this state, is due to the large spiders taking over their fields.
This is highest point within Talking Island, level wise. Once you have helped the residents of the farm and received your reward, you can choose to move on to the large continent and achieve what not many adventurers have achieved before. One of the best things about Talking Island back in the day was the boat trip to Gludin. It was a different experience altogether, you either had a lot of money so you could teleport to Gludin or you didn't. And mostly everyone didn't, so the boat was usually very busy.
Over the years of playing Lineage 2, Talking Island has been long forgotten about. My trips there are few and far between, but it was probably the most enjoyable part of the game, because everything on Talking Island was perfect.

The Elven Village - Home of the Elves! by Zundaji of Naia

Since Prelude the Elven Village was always the home of Elves. It is a beautiful village hovering over a lake next to the Mother tree. It is said that the Mother tree leaves were used by the Gods to create the race of Elves and that there was a powerful spell in the past that protected the Elven area from outsiders to enter, but this spell was broken when 7 of the 12 Elders that casted the spell died in the wars with the Dark Elves. After the spell was broken travelers from other areas were able to explore the Elven area and village and also evil monsters lurked its way into the once peaceful zone.

The Elven village and its surroundings are very graphical. You will find a lot of green fields, forests, a dungeon called Elven Fortress and there's also a huge lake called Lake Iris and sometimes, if you're lucky, you can even find a Unicorn around the lake! Of course in all these areas the creatures of darkness lure so wherever you go you find monsters that want to kill you! Before the Kamael Village appeared the Elven Village was always the perfect spot for new born Elves to explore and level from 1 to 20.

There were lots of quests that could be done to get Adena and armors and weapons. For example, one could kill Fungi and Orcs and one would always get around 3,000 Adena as reward - and the best is these quests were repeatable so you could stash up some money to buy what you need!

Once you hit level 10 you could do a quest called Skirmish with the Orcs where you needed to scout, explore the area and kill 2 random Orc chiefs and as reward you would get a Red Sunset Sword or Staff, Echo Crystals, Lesser Healing Pots and Soulshots or Spiritshots! When you got a group together you could also go level in the Elven Fortress, I would not have recommended to go deep without friends, though, as the mobs inside can hit quite hard and if you were not careful you may have ended up dead faster than you think! Nowadays these quest and areas are forgotten as everyone follows the newbie quests in the Kamael Village and the glory of the Elven Village and surroundings has blurred.

I remember when I created my first Elf character; I was stunned by the beauty of the landscape and did every available quest, explored every single area, died every now and then and had lots of fun with friends and foes. A particular quest that stuck in my mind was called Protecting the Water Source, in which you would get sent to the source of the Lake that provides nutrition for the Mother Tree and you were ordered to kill Plague Zombies which poisoned the water source. As I was under-geared I died a few times trying to kill the Zombies so I had to repeat the Fungi and Orc quests until I was able to afford a better dagger. After that I succeeded to kill the Zombies and get my reward of 18,250 Adena - which was a big deal back in the old Chronicles!

The Elven Village will be missed once the Goddess of Destruction awakens and destroys the Starter Villages as we know them - let's keep the beautiful Elven Village in our memories as all of us knew it!

Dark Elf Village by MUMBLY of Chronos

Shilen, daughter of Einhasad and Gran Kain, poured life into the frame of the elves with the power of water. However, after her father Gran Kain seduced her, she was banished from the heavens. Her little sister was given her gift of the water goddess, despite her incompetence. Shilen, impregnated by Gran Kain, bore demons and dragons.

Enraged at her mother who banished her and her father who abandoned her, Shilen created an army with her demonic offspring to overtake the Gods. However, losing her children and this war she could not stand her sadness, and she created the underworld to escape. She now resides at the center of the Dark Elf Village, and any remaining power she once had trickles out of her fingers as if turning into rising sparkling tears.

The path of the Dark Elves has seen as much tragedy as that of this fallen Goddess, and overwhelms the city. With Shilen at the center, these elves were forced to retreat to these lands, cursed by the light elves to be grounds of death and decay. The once beautiful foliage has been transformed into dead trees and rotting shrubs.

The city itself is hidden underground, where no sunlight can reach. The buildings are carved from dark stones, and have many points and sharp architecture. The Dark Elves themselves have even slipped into depravity from their grave situation, and have started to wear revealing clothes the other races find objectionable. As a starter village all Dark Elves start here, and quests for the Dark Elven race often hold a component in this region.

The areas around this zone were originally up to level 20, but now there have been additions that have brought higher level areas for players to return to this desolate city. Catacombs and Necropolises have been added for players from level 55 to level 80 within the Dark Elf territory. Other than this change there have been few additions to this area aside from a few NPC changes. The town itself has no mobs inside it as there are guards protecting the entrance. However, I learned the hard way that if I am engaged in battle with a mob and run to town for protection the mean guards will only laugh as I die at their feet.

The quests from this zone are numerous, although many are for Dark Elves only. Sweetest Venom and Bones Tell the Future are two quests which reward Adena for those Dark Elves who are as poor as their race would depict. Many of the class change quests for both first and second class changes will bring Dark Elves to this area as well. Not all of the quests are low level, as An Arrogant Search brings high level questers to this village to seek entrance to kill Baium.

I recall doing a quest for Tetrarch Thifiell, representative of the senior council. He rewarded me with an Eldritch Dagger! I thought that I was amazing at the time, not realizing that low non-grade gear was not the top gear in game. I also got 10 of each type of echo crystal, which were fun to play with. Almost anyone would dance with me when I played one of them, from starting toons to heroes. I thought I was so cool.

Orc Village by RUMBLY of Chronos

Orcs, physically strongest of the races, were created in form by Einhasad and given life and filled with Fire by Pa'agrio. Through many wars our great race has conquered lands and moved to other lands. Currently we Orcs hold a large mountainous island for ourselves, and murder any creature that is unlucky enough to cross our fortified borders. We are the greenest and meanest of the races, expressing our superior physical strength with hard strikes to the face of anyone we find unworthy.

The Orc Village itself is a starter zone, and is suitable for players up to level 20 to teleport to hunting areas. Our lands are cold and mountainous. Many have said that the loss of the battle between the elf-human alliance has forced our troops to retreat to this isolated land, but I believe we are regrouping our forces to someday reclaim our rightful place as rulers of the world. Still, the choice lands have temporarily been claimed by those humans. Who could know that such a weak race would grow to be the strongest?
Our Village is now fortified and safe from these prongs of battle, but many of our temples have been destroyed from the war. We have fought long and hard, and the evidence of our battle is all over. There are destroyed carvings lining our land, and some are even visible within the cities borders. Our temple has been protected, and Kakai our Flame Lord rests safely inside. Atop our proud temple is a statue of our Lord Pa'agrio, God of Fire.

We worship Pa'agrio by gaining superior strength for battle. Pa'agrio, eldest son of Einhasad and Gran Kain, is the only true heir of the kingdom and the only worthy God. His temple is one portion of the village that will remain kept up until the end of our race. The rest of the village is laid out in a circle with a large central square. Fires burn atop many of our buildings, both a symbol of our element, as well as a way to keep our cold mountain village warm.

The village used to be free of creatures, but the stress of the wars has taken its toll and some creatures now enter our once safe village. Luckily these creatures are low level and our superior strength allows us to deal with them as they enter. Gremlins are often used as training for young warriors, followed by Keltir and other such creatures.

There are many quests throughout the city. I suggest Long Live the Pa'agrio Lord! This quest is from Nakusin, and will give additional information about our proud lord, Pa'agrio. Into the City of Humans and Proof of Valor are good quests as well, and any Orc should prove their Valor as soon as possible. Our proud race relies on it.

The level 18 class change quests are much harder than these simple tasks, but the rewards are greater. I recall struggling through Path of the Orc Raider but now that I have killed difficult fire salamanders and other higher level creatures I am stronger and worthy of wearing the title of Orc Raider. Finding and eradicating the Fire Salamanders was especially difficult, I recall I had to have assistance to be able to destroy these difficult beasts.

This village may look cold and isolated due to the mountainous seclusion and cold brick buildings, but to me it will always remain home. From hunting Gremlins when I was a young Orc Fighter to leaving the land when I graduated as an Orc Raider, I will always remember my time in Orc Village. Throughout the transitions of the various wars and discoveries this is one town which has remained constant.

Dwarven Village by GIGLS of Chronos

Nestled deep in the icy mountains of the north rests Dwarven Village, the starter town for the Dwarven race. We Dwarves are the most adorable of all the races, possessing a keen eye for gaining Adena, wearing hats, and hoarding shiny things. Despite our low INT, we have acquired the ability to create items the other races find baffling. As a starter village all Dwarves are spawned here, and can stay in this area until they are in their low 20's.

During this time we Dwarves enjoy fighting monsters and beasts throughout this icy, mountainous land. I remember hunting Orcs and Werewolves just North of Dwarven village to spoil crafting recipes for myself. It seems so long ago, and I laugh when I recall wondering if I was amazing for taking down a giant spider. Now I realize I am obviously amazing, but we all learn as we level. Once some mean gemstone beasts that got the best of me when I was trying to get a calculator. Those cats sure pack a punch, but I got the best of them in the end.

The Village itself has not seen many changes, although the region and the characters have evolved as the lore has progressed. For example, the Freya update brought a way to run from the previously isolated village into higher hunting areas. There was also the change to a high level archer hunting area in the Mithril Mines. Most recently when Kamaels were discovered several NPCs could not stop talking about how excited they were at the prospect of a new race to rob blind - I mean to trade with.

Maphr, Goddess of Earth, is the chosen Goddess of the Dwarven race. It is no wonder that we Dwarves worship this goddess - the female Dwarves vastly out-number the male Dwarves and mining for shiny things is one of the favorite Dwarven pastimes. That's why there are mines all around the Dwarven Village, but despite spending much time searching them I have not been able to locate as many shiny things as I would like. The previous Dwarves have been very thorough in their collections, but Maphr willing I will find enough shinies to satisfy my own fascination.

I contributed to the advancement of my race and the NPCs in Dwarven Village through many of the quests I completed. For example, I personally helped to locate pieces of Maphr's Tablet which contains clues to the secrets of Absolute Geometry. We Dwarves already get everything we want (just look at how many hats I own) but soon we will unravel all the secrets of Absolute Geometry and be unstoppable rulers of the world!

The NPCs in Dwarven Village are nearly as awesome as me, my favorite being Airy. I did a quest for her once called "Jumble, Tumble, Diamond Fuss" and I learned that she had a pet Blade Bat that swallowed her diamond and few away! Unfortunately I could not bring her pet back because a hunter had killed it, but I was able to cheer her up again with a Berry Tart. That girl sure loves her Berry Tarts, but I'm sure she still misses poor Kurupuru.

Unfortunately not all dwarves are as friendly as Airy. Dorf is a Dwarf who lurks around and spreads his misguided views. He actually believes that the endless pursuit to acquire more Adena is a sign of mental instability! Can you believe that? It's ridiculous. Luckily the only time I have had to talk to that dumb Dorf is in the "Trial of the Pilgrim" quest. This Dwarf is where people got the derogatory term "Dorf" to describe our race. He is a plague on our race, and I am ashamed every time I am called a "Dorf."

I will definitely miss Dwarven Village if it is destroyed, and I am attempting to stop the impending destruction. Should I prove unsuccessful I wish to leave this document as proof of the beautiful village of my birth. My fellow Dwarves and I have had many adventures here; it is truly a village to treasure.

Windmill Hill by GRR of Chronos

Windmill Hill is intended for solo hunting from level 15 to level 21. However, I enjoy coming here for the romantic scenery even at level 85. The highest peak of this area gives a scenic view of Gludin which any couple can enjoy, or in my case any lonely Orc and his healing potions. Either way this zone was adeptly created for toons doing class change quests and XP'ing at these low levels.

Throughout the years Windmill Hill has seen few changes aside from player population and utilization. The zone was very popular at the starting days of lineage, and many players PvP'ed and circulated the quest mobs such as Venomous Spiders and Arachnid Trackers. However, lately this area has not seen much activity, and the mobs have fully taken over the ruins of the area. There are such faster ways to achieve high levels and quickly finish quests that it is rare to meet another player here. It is now more useful as a romantic getaway for those seeking a quiet spot with a scenic background.

Windmill Hill is named for the gorgeous rolling hills and the abandoned windmills of the area. The hills are sprinkled with autumn trees rustling in the wind and low waving fields of wheat. There were once many homesteads on these lands, but now they are abandoned ruins from the years of war that have spread across this picturesque land. Resting southeast of Gludin, this area neighbors the endless ocean and high mountains that separate it from the wastelands.

The lore of this zone is the lore of Lineage itself. After the fall of the Giants there were no great forces to keep the world in order. The Elves attempted to lead the races as the superior race, but the Orcs rebelled claiming that they should be the leaders of the world due to their superior strength. The Orcs almost won the war until the humans, weak but numerous, joined the Elves and pushed the Orcs to the northern plateaus. At this point the humans rebelled against the Elves they had been helping, and claimed reign to the territory. Unfortunately by this point most of the structures of this area had been destroyed, leaving this beautiful field of rolling hills and autumn trees littered with ruins of previous houses and structures.

There are many monsters throughout this zone. Three of them are spiders, which have a nasty poison effect. I recall being sent here on my class change quest to hunt Venomous Spiders. These mobs are level 18 and non-aggressive, but I had to rest after nearly every kill to regenerate HP from their powerful poison. I have since learned more about antidotes, but that's really not the point. I'm a slow Orc, we hit things we're not really good at learning things sometimes. Many of the first class change quests utilize this area, with some examples being: Path of the Warrior, Path of the Warder, and Path of the Human Knight.

Due to the number of class change quests which utilize this zone it was a popular pvp ground, as well as a popular zone for pkers to hide. There was on in particular that was bothering some clannies of mine by the name of SCOUTR. Since I knew he was in the area I put on some low level armor and headed out to this zone. Sure enough SCOUTR popped out from behind some ruins and started to attack me. I quickly equipped my Sword of Valhalla and nuked him twice. The quite surprised SCOUTR was generous enough to drop me his dagger, which I gave to my clannie as a reminder that pkers always pay in the end.

Wastelands by Nekonome of Chronos

In the past 7 years, many zones have been added to Lineage 2. Over time, these zones were revised and changed. Very few can claim to have remained in their original state like the wastelands. The wastelands are not only one of the oldest zones in the game, but one of the oldest zones in the Lineage series. In Lineage 1, it is a desert that serves as the location for a town, a castle, and the location in which the demon Beleth is imprisoned. Through both series, the wastelands are home to the Ant Queen and her brood as well as many other familiar monsters.

Classic monsters such as basilisks and floating eyes still exist there to this day, maintaining ten year long tradition of being clobber by new players. Another fan favorite was the vast armies of the Ant Queen. Their nest can be found in the north of the wastelands, and its tunnels seem to go on forever. At the very heart of the nest lies the Ant Queen. She was one of the first bosses introduced to Lineage in Prelude, and has been a source of conflict between players for years. When epic boss jewelry was introduced, the Ant Queen received a ring with stats that were highly desirable for both low level and high level players. Even now, with the Goddess of Destruction awakening, her ring is still highly desirable and most likely will be for years to come.

The wastelands are one of the original Lineage 2 zones and the average monster level is relatively low compared to the rest of the world. All monsters fall within the level 20 to 40 bracket. Starting from south and eastern boarders of the zone and working your way, you will find monsters in their low 20s to 30s. Upon entering the Ant Nest, monsters can get as high as level 40, with the Queen Ant being the most powerful of monsters in the wastelands at level 40. There is a diverse population of monsters including monster eyes, floating eyes, basilisks, Ol Mahums, skeletons, golems, tyrants and of course, giant ants.

The region itself is rather desolate. Oranges and browns dominate the landscape, as do dead trees, fallen rocks, and the spires of the Ant's Nest. In a hundred years time, it will eventually become a flat desert that is retaken by followers of the light in the world of Lineage 1. In the time of Lineage 2, it is still a broken land of rocks and dust with scars of both physical and mystical battle all around. A few remnants of life and civilization remain, with a broken buildings and ruins peppering the border of the wastelands. According to the wizards at the Ivory Tower, the wastelands were the site of a great battle between the demon Beleth and the forces of good. Other sources indicate that it was also the site of a great battle between the country of Aden and the country of Gracia. A lone, broken statue commemorates these events in the middle of the wastelands. 30 years before the last war, an unnamed town existed in this area, as described by the Summoner Basilla. Basilla exists to assist mystic players in their quest to become Summoners. The only friendly humanoid habitation this area belongs to a pair of enterprising traders named Sarien and Rolento. Their body guard Jax watches over them. To the north, inside of the wastelands itself, is the wizard Casian. He is an important man to meet in order to gain access to Hellbound.

A short distance from these brave grocers is the portal to the Hellbound Island, which is guarded by Jirrone. Further south is Hellbound Island itself. Even at higher levels, players still end up involuntarily visiting the wastelands as this is the dump site for failed expeditions to Hellbound Island. I have personally made this trip, multiple times, much to my chagrin. Although my first memory of the zone was of losing my D-grade helmet while trying to run through the Ant nest; I didn't run fast enough and my helmet was never seen nor heard from again!

Catacombs and Necropolises by Kabamaru of Chronos

I'm going to report on the Catacomb of the Apostate and the Necropolis of Martyrdom as my eyes lived and my experience gained from the game. I have spent a lot of time of my real life XP'ing in both places. I always feel that is a passage to level 76 which is the arrival of S-Grade armor and weapons, and of course the 3rd class. Most of the people even now go and XP theirs subclasses in these places so most times they fight each other for the rooms and many times even mass clan or ally PvP'ing takes place out of the two grounds. In early times of Lineage II in the 3rd Chronicle of the game, when both places appeared on the map, most of the people were at the levels that both places require and as you understand the crowded places makes problems. The problems are being solved by having wars or a lot of PvP. Both places are appropriate for fighter leveling. Mages can't XP there, as the monsters have big resistance to magic attack spells.

Catacomb Of Apostate: First of all, the location of the Catacomb of the Apostate is near the Plains of the Lizardmen in Oren Territory. The good thing with this catacomb is that when you use a Scroll Of Escape you return in Oren Castle Town. The levels of the monsters start from level 50 in the front rooms and they reach level 60 in the very deep rooms of the catacomb. Everyone goes there in early levels like 45-48 because the mobs are killed easily and they don't stun. Furthermore if you have a buffer your XP there is ideal. The seal stones dropped from the monsters a few, but it's a start when you want to farm or gather seal stones. Seal stones are drops that I'm going to discuss later. Some Of the evil monsters that live in this place are: Nephilim Priests and Lilim Magus in the front rooms, Purgatory Whisps and Purgatory Serpents in the middle rooms, and Nephilim Swordsmen and Lilim Knights-Errat in the deep rooms. The max level that you can gain is 64.

Necropolis of Martyrdom: The location of the Necropolis of Martyrdom appears and is located near the Giran Castle in the Giran territory. The levels of the monsters appear in this place are from 60 to 70. The point is that some of the classes can XP solo there because the monsters are powerful. Some of the classes that can XP solo are Destroyers and Warlords, with buffs of course. When you use a Scroll Of Escape you go straight in Giran, so that is one of the advantages of this place. The drop rate of the seal stones here is big enough so that a party of two people can easily share and everyone will be happy. Some of these powerful monsters are called: Hell Keeper Crimson Doll and Lilim Assassin.

Seven Signs: Small things have changed in the past of Chronicles. I feel one is the Drop Rate of the Seal Stones. The eternal war between Cabal of Dawn and Cabal of Twilight was from the beginning an easy win for the Cabal of Dawn. Sometimes the powerful people of the game used to win by themselves the Cabal of Twilight just to make the rest of the people on the server mad. During the first week of the Seven Signs, the competition period, any characters who join a Cabal can access the dungeons. After the competition period is over and the Seals are effective, only the Cabal who owns the appropriate Seal can have access.

The Cabals can acquire seal stones by hunting the monsters in the dungeons. Nephilim monsters drops stones necessary for Dusk, and Lilim monsters drops stones necessary for Dawn. In the competition period, the general monsters Lilim and Nephilim all appear, but if the players acquired the seals during the Seal Effective period, the general monsters and the monsters who drop only the necessary items only appear for the winner.

Some NPCs in the map were exchanging them for Ancient Adena. Ancient Adena is acquired through seal stones as I said before, during the competition period. Ancient Adena is used to purchase the items from the Priests of Dawn or Dusk, Blacksmith of Mammon, or Trader of Mammon. The Black Market Trader of Mammon will also convert Ancient Adena to regular Adena at a one-to-one ratio.
